Title: Ysbryd y Mwynwyr - Spirit of the Miners
OchreWaterwheel at LlywernogYstrad Einion

Lying 12 miles to the east of Aberystwyth, the Forestry Commission visitor Centre at Nant yr Arian offers something for all the family. Play areas for the youngsters, Red Kite feeding and photography opportunities for the more sedate, and mountain bike, equestrian and walking trails for the more energetic.

Nant Yr Arian sits on the main A44 trunk road, which passes right through the heart of mining country. As you head west, towards the coast crossing from Powys into Ceredigion the undulating terrain begins to reveal some of its secrets.

The historic mines of Castell, Ponterwyd, Nant Yr Arian, Darren, Cwmsymlog, Cwmerfin, Nant Y Moch, Ystumtuen, Llywernog, Goginan, Cwmbrwno and Rheidol are all but a few minutes away. Some of these live on in the names of the communities that can be seen on road signs communities that owe their very being to the mines, most however, are now forgotten and overgrown.

Whilst enjoying the many facilities at Nant Yr Arian, why not take a moment to reflect on a once industrialised landscape, of the workers raising precious ore from the miles of underground tunnels and of fortunes made and lost.

This forest area includes one of the Forest District's main recreational facilities: Nant yr Arian Visitor Centre (open 10am - 5pm summer, 10am - dusk winter) is located in the heart of Forestry Commission Land. The 525 bus from Aberystwyth to Ponterwyd stops at the car park entrance.

The forest is shaped like a horseshoe above a deep valley which stretches all the way to the sea 10 miles away. The views are breathtaking, and there is something on offer here for all the family - waymarked forest walks and children's play areas, mountain bike routes and daily Red Kite feeding.

Refreshments are available in the Visitor Centre Café and Shop. But if you prefer a more hands on approach visit the visitor centre to have an opportunity to feed the kites whilst also taking in the spectacular scenery.
