Pontrhydfendigaid

The historic village of Pontrhydfengaid grew up around the nearby Cistercian Abbey at Strata Florida. The current village with its Georgian style houses is mainly due to the prosperity of the later lead mines.

Strata Florida

Strata Florida Abbey ('vale of Flowers') is located deep in the heart of Ceredigion, in the village of Pontrhydfendigaid. Strata Florida was once a large Cistercian Abbey founded in 1164, where it became a significant site in terms of Welsh Culture and located in the cementary next to the Abbey is the burial place of Welsh poet Dafydd ap Gwilym.

The chief mines of the locality were at Esgair Mwyn, Fairchance, Llwyn Cwyddell, CwmMawr, Abbey Consols/Bronberllan and Bendigaid, although little remains of the former bustling industry that once gave wealth to the village.

The newly rebuilt Pafilion aims to reassert Pontrhydfendigaid as a centre for cultural arts.
Original Medieval Tile from the exhibition at Strata Florida Abbey

In the later nineteenth century, the remains of the Abbey church and part of the cloister were uncovered and these are now maintained along with an exhibition of original medieval tiles by cadw.

Bron y Berllan mine

Just to the north of the Abbey lies Bron y Berllan mine where excavations have taken place on the old mine site which has various remains. This could potentially be one of the sites used by the monks from the Abbey. The Cistercians were renowned for their skill in the extraction and processing of metals, especially, in this area - iron, lead and silver.

Since 2004 preliminary excavations have been taken place by Lampeter University which in 2006 was partly funded by Spirit of the Miners. The major programme of work will be undertaken next year. The aim of the research into the areas historic landscape will be to develop a tourism and educational facility and conserve the site through an independant strata florida trust, assisted by Pentir Pumlumon. Work will therefore continue for the next few years!

Black Lion Hotel

The village has a number of facilities including a shop, post office and two public houses including the Red Lion and the Black Lion Hotel.
